System---Supplement 2}
Per Bothner reports that:
{\parindent 20pt \narrower{
gftodvi is installed on Leland, as well as the gray font [but it can only be
run from a V-System Sun workstation and not by TNing to leland].
gftodvi does not support command line arguments [so type {\tt gftodvi<cr>}
and wait for the filename request].
To print the resulting dvi file, run dvid. (This {\bf is} a Unix program,
courtesy of Howard, so you can run it either under V, or when TELNETting
to Leland.) It works. [Type {\tt dvid <filename><cr>}].
\smallskip}}

The V-System has a {\sl help} feature. Typical examples;
$$\vbox{\halign{\tt #\hfil&\quad #\hfil\cr
you type&leland replies\cr
\noalign{\smallskip}
help<cr>&a summary of the V-System.\cr
help ved<cr>&a summary of {\tt ved} commands.\cr
help menu<cr>&an explanation of the menus.\cr
help bits<cr>&an explanation of {\tt bits commands.}\cr
}}$$
If you need to boot your workstation please refer to the whiteboard for
the latest method.
The out-of-memory problem is still with us.
With the present difficulties in maintaining enough working Sun Workstations
it may pay those people having accounts on other systems to generate their
files on these other stations and PUPFTP them to leland.
The following procedure has been found to work from SAIL, as an example:
$$\vbox{\halign{#\hfil\quad& \tt #\hfil\cr
leland types&you type\cr
\noalign{\smallskip}
&r pupftp;leland<cr>\cr
*&user <your user name><cr>\cr
password:&<your password><cr>\cr
*&store <source name>{\tensy \char'041}<leland name><cr>\cr
repeats transaction {\tt <}confirm{\tt >}&y<cr> or n<cr>\cr
{\tt <} Successful store\cr
28378 Bits/sec.\cr
*&quit<cr>\cr
}}$$
It may also save you an unsuccessful trip to ERL if you find out if
the system is working and how many people are using it. You can do this
(from SAIL, for example)
by TNing to leland thus: (observe cases and be sure to logout)
$$\vbox{\halign{#\hfil\quad& \tt #\hfil\cr
leland types&you type\cr
\noalign{\smallskip}
& tn leland<cr>\cr
user:&<your user name><cr>\cr
password:&<your password><cr>\cr
leland{\tt >}&ps -aux|fgrep V10session<cr>\cr
leland replies\cr
leland{\tt >}&logout<cr>\cr
}}$$
